This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
Last month, showrunner Simon Barry gave Warrior Nun fans some great—if cryptic—news, tweeting that the canceled-by-Netflix show would return and be “more EPIC than you could imagine.”
Could you imagine movies? Because that’s what you’re getting. According to executive producer Dean English, “Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures.”
English’s announcement was posted online yesterday, and you can watch the whole thing below.
There are few details here; as English says, “One thing we need to touch on involves the strike in Hollywood involving actors and writers. And it’s due to that, that we cannot make any announcements today on that front.”
Warrior Nun is based on the graphic novel Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn, and follows the story of a young woman who is resurrected by a peculiar—and, y’know, divine—artifact in her back. Once re-alive, she discovers that she’s part of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, and it’s time to start hunting demons.
The show first aired in 2020 on Netflix, and was renewed for a second season, which arrived in November of 2022. In December, it was canceled, and fans have been pushing for its revival ever since. A show about a resurrected demon-fighting nun being itself resurrected? Yeah, that tracks.
No further details about the eventual Warrior Nun movies have been announced.
